Grand tour racing makes an appearance on the PlayStation with Gran Turismo. Beginners will want to play the Arcade mode and hit one of the games 11 unique tracks. By winning races in the A, B, and C classes, new cars, tracks, and options will become available. Where the game really shines, though, is in the Gran Turismo mode. Players start out with a small amount of cash to buy a first car, but the player must pass several licensing tests before they can race out on the track. The licensing exams are a tutorial to the game?s controls and are not as menacing as they sound. Once out on the track, all of the nearly 150 different cars have unique quirks that take some time to learn. To have any success, the player must learn to adjust to the under steer of
rear-wheel drive cars, the over steer of front-wheel drive vehicles, and the touchy controls of a four-wheel drive automobile. With two unique modes of play, GRAN TURISMO has something for arcade racing fans as well as hardcore simulation freaks.
